What Are Infrared / Multi-Therapy PEMF Mats?

Infrared / multi-therapy PEMF mats are mats that combine PEMF with several other wellness features in one product. They are often marketed as infrared PEMF mats, crystal PEMF mats or all-in-one therapy mats. Many include a combination of PEMF, far infrared heat, crystals or gemstones, negative ions, red light, grounding and sometimes other features.

 

On the surface, this can sound appealing. Instead of buying separate devices, you are being offered several therapies in one mat.

The problem is that each therapy still needs to be delivered properly. A mat is not automatically better because it lists more features. The PEMF still needs good coil design, proper field coverage, a clean signal, suitable intensity, a useful waveform and a meaningful slew rate. The red light still needs enough power and coverage. The negative ion claims still need to be measurable. The infrared heat still needs to be delivered safely and cleanly.

 

The key point is simple: more therapies does not automatically mean a better device. Each feature needs to be judged on whether it actually does what the marketing says it does.

What Mats Are We Talking About?

When we talk about infrared / multi-therapy PEMF mats, we are referring to the common style of crystal-packed mats that appear across the market under many different brand names. These mats often look very similar and usually include a mix of PEMF, far infrared heat, gemstones, negative ions, red light and grounding claims. They are often sold as premium wellness mats, but many appear to come from the same style of manufacturing supply chain.

 

This page is not aimed at one specific brand. It is about the wider category of infrared / multi-therapy PEMF mats and the common issues we have seen across this type of product. Some mats may perform slightly better than others. In our own testing, one mat was better than another in certain areas. But the overall pattern was still the same: the PEMF side was poorly designed, the field coverage was limited, and several of the extra therapies did not appear to be delivered at a meaningful level.

 

So if you are wondering, “does this apply to my mat?”, the answer is that it may depend on the exact product. But if the mat follows the same general design, with crystals, infrared heat, red light LEDs, negative ion claims and a small number of hidden PEMF coils, then the same concerns are worth taking seriously.

 

The point of this page is not to say that every single mat is identical. The point is that this style of product has repeated design problems that consumers should know about before buying.

The Main Problem: Too Many Therapies, Not Enough Quality

The main issue with many infrared / multi-therapy PEMF mats is not that they combine more than one therapy. PEMF can work well alongside other wellness technologies when each one is properly designed and delivered. The problem is that many of these mats seem to focus more on listing as many therapies as possible than on making sure each one is actually effective. This is where the “all-in-one” idea starts to fall apart.

 

A mat may claim to include PEMF, far infrared heat, crystals, negative ions, red light and grounding, but each of those therapies has its own requirements. PEMF needs proper coils, clean signal quality, useful field coverage and a meaningful waveform. Red light needs enough power, the right wavelengths and proper skin coverage. Negative ion claims need to be measurable. Infrared heat needs to be delivered safely without introducing unwanted electrical noise.

 

In many cases, these mats feel like a box-ticking exercise. Each therapy is included just enough to be advertised, but not always enough to be delivered at a meaningful level. That is why we often describe them as jack of all trades, master of none. More features do not automatically make a better product. In fact, when too many therapies are squeezed into one mat without proper engineering, each therapy can end up being compromised.

The PEMF Problem Comes First

If a product is being sold as an infrared PEMF mat, the PEMF side should be one of the strongest and most transparent parts of the device. This is where many infrared / multi-therapy PEMF mats start to fall apart.

 

The issue is not just that the PEMF is low intensity. Low intensity PEMF can be useful when it is designed properly. The issue is that many of these mats have poor coil design, limited coverage, unclear specifications, slow waveforms, very low slew rates and, in some cases, unwanted electrical noise.

Coil Design: The Biggest Red Flag

The coil design is usually the first major problem. Many infrared / multi-therapy PEMF mats use small ferrite rod coils rather than proper PEMF coil layouts. These rods are not the same as well-engineered copper PEMF coils and are often used because they are cheap, small and easy to include inside a layered mat. Ferrite rods were originally designed for radio, antenna and electronic circuit applications, not as the ideal coil structure for delivering broad PEMF coverage across the body.

 

The issue is that they tend to create a very narrow, concentrated magnetic field that drops off quickly, rather than a wider and more evenly distributed field. This is the opposite of what most people expect from a PEMF mat. Cost is also part of the problem. Similar ferrite rod coils can be found from overseas suppliers for around $1 or less per unit. A proper PEMF coil physically cannot be made that cheaply because it requires more copper, better construction and a layout designed to create useful field coverage.

This matters because a mat can still be marketed as a PEMF mat even if the coil design is extremely limited. It may technically produce PEMF, but that does not mean the field is strong, evenly distributed or well delivered across the body.

 

Many of these mats only use around four to six small coils, and in some cases the coils are not even placed across the full length of the mat. This can create large dead zones where parts of the body may receive little to no PEMF exposure.

 

In one test discussed on the podcast, the field had already dropped to around 22% of its maximum strength just 3cm above the coil. That is a major issue when the whole point of a mat is to deliver a field through and across the body.

 

If a company cannot clearly explain what type of coils are inside the device, how many there are, how they are arranged and how the field has been tested, that should be treated as a major red flag.

Intensity Claims Can Be Misleading

Intensity is another area where infrared / multi-therapy PEMF mats can become confusing. In our experience, most of these mats either do not clearly list their PEMF intensity, or the information is very hard to verify. When you contact the company and ask for the actual gauss output, the answer is often unclear. Some sellers provide voltage ranges, power information or vague technical files instead of a clear magnetic field measurement.

 

That is a major concern. If a company is selling a product as a PEMF mat, it should be able to tell you what the PEMF output actually is and how it was measured.

 

In our testing, we measured examples around 21 gauss and 41 gauss directly at the coil. On paper, those numbers may not sound terrible for a low-intensity PEMF device. The problem is that the field drops off so quickly that the number at the coil does not tell you what the body is actually receiving. A high reading taken directly over a small ferrite rod coil is not the same as useful coverage across the mat. If the field disappears quickly above or around the coil, the gauss number becomes much less meaningful.

 

This is also where Weber becomes useful to understand.

 

Gauss tells you the strength of the magnetic field at a specific point. Weber gives a better idea of how much magnetic field is actually being delivered across an area. In simple terms, gauss is like measuring one point, while Weber helps describe the wider field being produced. This is why a tiny coil can sometimes produce a high gauss reading close to the coil, but still have poor real-world coverage. It may look good as a number, but the field may not spread well through the body.

 

For a PEMF mat, you do not just want a high reading in one tiny spot. You want a useful field that is spread across the mat in a way that actually reaches the body. This is why intensity should never be judged on its own. You need to look at the coil type, coil size, coil layout, field spread, slew rate and measured output.

Slew Rate and Waveform Issues

Slew rate is where the PEMF side of these mats becomes even more concerning. PEMF relies on a changing magnetic field. The faster the field changes, the stronger the inductive effect may be. This is why slew rate matters.

 

In our testing, the slew rates measured on this style of mat were extremely low. We saw examples around 0.7 T/s and 0.4 T/s, and in other testing on similar mats, readings have been reported below 0.2 T/s.

 

For a PEMF mat, anything below 1 T/s is, in our opinion, extremely poor. At that level, the magnetic field is changing so slowly that it raises serious questions about how meaningful the PEMF signal really is.

 

Many of these mats also use slow sine-wave style outputs rather than faster-rising square or sawtooth-style pulses. This matters because a slow waveform usually creates a slower change in the magnetic field, which directly affects the slew rate. So even if the product says it has PEMF, the technical quality of that PEMF may be very low.

Frequency Is Not Always What It Seems

Frequency is another area where infrared / multi-therapy PEMF mats can be misleading. A proper PEMF frequency should describe how often the PEMF pulse is being produced. For example, 10 Hz should mean the device is producing 10 PEMF pulses per second. The problem is that, with some of these mats, the advertised frequency settings may not represent a clean, purpose-built PEMF signal in the way most people would expect.

 

In testing on similar mats, the underlying signal appeared to be tied to mains electricity, such as 50 Hz in the UK or 60 Hz in the US. The controller then appeared to switch that signal on and off at different rates and present those settings as different frequencies. That is not the same as a proper PEMF signal generator creating a clean pulse at the selected frequency.

 

This matters because a device may advertise a range of frequency settings, but if the underlying signal is still mains-related, noisy or poorly controlled, the frequency list does not mean very much. It also helps explain why many of these mats have such poor slew rates and weak waveform quality. If the device is mainly switching a mains-related signal rather than producing a clean PEMF pulse, the output can be slow, messy and far less controlled.

 

That does not mean frequency is irrelevant. Frequency can matter when it is part of a well-designed PEMF signal. The problem is when frequency is used as a marketing feature while the actual output is not properly explained, tested or cleanly generated. The better question is not, “how many frequency settings does this mat have?” The better question is, “what signal is actually coming from the coils?”

Dirty Electricity and Signal Noise

The concern is not only that the PEMF may be weak. It is also that some mats may expose the user to unwanted electrical noise at the same time.

 

In one mat we tested, we detected a clear 50 Hz field, which is directly linked to UK mains electricity. That is not the same as a clean, intentional PEMF signal. Another mat performed slightly better because it did not show the same pulsing 50 Hz field, but the signal still appeared noisy and affected by external electrical interference.

 

This is a major concern because a PEMF mat should be delivering a clean, controlled pulsed magnetic field. It should not feel like the user is lying on a device that is simply allowing mains-related electrical noise to come through.

 

This is especially important with infrared / multi-therapy PEMF mats because they often combine PEMF with heating elements, mains power, crystals, lights and multiple internal layers. If the product is not engineered properly, these layers can interfere with each other.

 

The key point is simple: the PEMF side of these mats should not be judged by the fact that they contain coils. It should be judged by the quality of the signal, the coil design, the field coverage, the waveform, the slew rate and whether the output is clean. When we look at this category of mat, the PEMF side is usually the biggest reason for concern.

The Red Light Problem

Red light therapy is another major reason people buy infrared / multi-therapy PEMF mats. On the surface, it sounds like a great combination. PEMF and red light can work well together when both therapies are properly delivered. The problem is that the red light in many of these mats is usually nowhere near the same as using a proper red light panel.

Red Light Coverage Is Minimal

The first issue is coverage. Red light only works where the light actually reaches the skin. With a proper red light panel, the LEDs are spread across a large surface area and you usually sit or stand a short distance away. This allows the light to spread across a much larger area of the body.

 

With infrared / multi-therapy PEMF mats, the setup is completely different. The LEDs are usually small, spaced apart and built into the surface of the mat. Because you lie directly on top of them, the light does not spread across the body in the same way. Instead, each LED acts more like a tiny pinprick of light against the skin.

 

In our testing, the individual LEDs measured around 0.5cm wide. When we calculated the actual direct light coverage, a mat with 12 LEDs gave around 2.5cm² of coverage, while a mat with 32 LEDs gave around 6.5cm² of coverage. That is not full-body red light therapy. 

 

Even if the mat physically covers the whole body, the red light is only being applied to the small areas where the LEDs contact the skin. This is why “full-body red light” can be very misleading when used for this style of mat.

The Measured Red Light Output Was Extremely Low

The second issue is strength. Red light therapy is not just about whether the LEDs turn on or look bright. The important measurement is irradiance, usually measured in mW/cm². This tells you how much light power is actually reaching the skin.

 

Using a light spectrometer, we measured the red light output from these mats at under 1 mW/cm². That is extremely low. A commonly referenced lower starting point for therapeutic red light is around 5 mW/cm², meaning the mats we tested were well below that level. For context a Christmas tree light will be around 1 mW/cm². 

 

A simple way to understand it is that the output was closer to a small decorative LED than a proper red light therapy device.

So even if the mat technically contains red LEDs, that does not mean it is delivering meaningful red light therapy.

How Was the Red Light Measured?

The third issue is how the red light is measured. 

 

A proper light spectrometer is one of the better ways to test red light because it can measure both the wavelength and the irradiance. This helps show whether the light is actually producing the wavelength claimed, and how strong that light really is. Good spectrometers are not cheap. Many cost upwards of $1,000, and professional test-house equipment can cost significantly more.

 

Some companies may use cheaper solar meters instead. These can cost closer to £100, which makes them much more accessible, but they are not the best tool for measuring red light therapy output from small LEDs. Solar meters are generally designed to measure broader solar radiation, not accurately assess therapeutic red light wavelengths from LED devices. Because of this, they can give higher or less useful readings, which may make the red light appear stronger than it really is.

 

This is why consumers should ask what equipment was used to measure the red light. A few small red LEDs inside a mat does not make it a proper red light therapy device. For red light to be meaningful, you need the right wavelength, enough power, proper skin coverage and accurate testing.

The Far Infrared Heat Problem

Far infrared heat is another major selling point of infrared / multi-therapy PEMF mats. The idea sounds appealing. You lie on the mat, the gemstones warm up, and the product is marketed as delivering far infrared heat into the body.

 

The problem is that, in many of these mats, the “far infrared” feature appears to be much closer to a basic electric heating system than a properly engineered far infrared therapy device.

Far Infrared or Just a Heated Mat?

Many infrared / multi-therapy PEMF mats use simple heating wires inside the mat. These are often silicone heating wires, similar to the type of basic heating element you might find in electric blankets, heated seat pads or other low-cost heat products. 

 

That does not mean the mat cannot get warm. It can. The issue is that getting warm is not the same as proving that the device is delivering a meaningful far infrared therapy. A warm surface will naturally emit infrared energy, but that does not automatically mean the product is producing the kind of controlled, tested far infrared output implied by the marketing.

 

This is where the wording can become misleading. A mat may be promoted as a far infrared therapy mat, when in reality the main mechanism may simply be an electric heating wire warming the surface of the mat. For some people, that warmth may still feel pleasant. Heat can be relaxing and may help someone feel more comfortable during a session. But consumers should understand the difference between basic surface heat and a properly tested far infrared system.

Heat Does Not Prove the PEMF Is Working

One of the biggest problems with these mats is that heat can make the product feel more active than it really is. When someone lies on the mat and feels warmth, it is easy to assume all the therapies are working well. But the heat has nothing to do with whether the PEMF signal is good.

 

A mat can feel warm and still have poor PEMF coil design, weak field coverage, low slew rate, unclear intensity and noisy signal quality. This is why heat can sometimes distract from the bigger issue. The user feels something, but what they are mainly feeling may just be warmth from the heating element, not the PEMF itself.

Combining Heat and PEMF Creates Design Challenges

Far infrared heat and PEMF can exist in the same product, but they need to be engineered carefully. PEMF is based on low-frequency pulsed magnetic fields. Infrared heat systems are usually powered by mains electricity and heating elements. When these are built into the same mat, there is a risk of electrical noise, interference or unwanted fields if the system is not properly designed and shielded. This is especially important because the user is lying directly on top of the device.

 

In our testing, switching on the heat function increased the concern around unwanted electrical fields. This is one of the reasons we are cautious about mats that combine heating elements, PEMF coils, crystals, lights and multiple layers without showing clear independent testing. There is also a design conflict.

 

If a manufacturer adds shielding to reduce unwanted electrical exposure from the heating system, that shielding needs to be placed and designed carefully. If it is done badly, it may affect the PEMF field. If it is not done well enough, electrical noise may still reach the user. This is why combining therapies is not as simple as putting everything into one mat.

The Negative Ion Problem

Negative ions are another common selling point of infrared / multi-therapy PEMF mats. Many of these mats claim that the gemstones or crystals inside the mat release negative ions when heated. This is often presented as one of the major added benefits of the product. The problem is that negative ion claims are very easy to market, but much harder to prove.

Negative Ion Claims Need to Be Measurable

If a mat claims to produce negative ions, that output should be measurable. It is not enough for a company to say that the mat contains tourmaline, jade, amethyst or other gemstones and therefore produces negative ions. The company should be able to show actual negative ion testing using the correct equipment.

 

In our testing, this was one of the most concerning areas. When this style of mat was tested with a proper negative ion meter, the reading came back at zero measurable negative ion output. That is a major problem when negative ions are being used as one of the main marketing claims.

Heating Crystals Does Not Automatically Mean Negative Ions

A lot of the marketing around these mats suggests that heating the crystals or gemstones creates negative ions. But simply warming crystals inside a mat does not automatically mean the product is releasing measurable negative ions into the air or onto the body.

 

These mats operate at normal heat therapy temperatures. They are not reaching the extreme temperatures that would typically be required to produce meaningful ion release from minerals in the way some marketing suggests. So while the mat may get warm, that does not prove it is producing negative ions. 

 

This is similar to the far infrared issue. Feeling heat does not prove that every claimed therapy is working.

What About the Crystals Themselves?

Crystals and gemstones are one of the most recognisable features of infrared / multi-therapy PEMF mats. Many of these mats contain stones such as amethyst, tourmaline, jade, obsidian or quartz. They are often used to make the product look more premium and to support claims around negative ions, far infrared heat or energy-based benefits.

 

We are not here to tell someone that they cannot enjoy crystals as part of their own wellness routine. Some people like the feel, appearance or ritual of using crystals, and that is a personal choice. The issue is when crystals are used to make a product sound more advanced than it really is.

 

A mat containing gemstones does not automatically mean the PEMF signal is well designed. It does not prove the red light is strong enough. It does not prove negative ions are being produced. It does not prove the infrared heat has been properly measured. It does not prove the device has clean signal quality. This is where consumers can be misled.

 

The crystals can make the mat feel more luxurious, but they should not distract from the actual technology inside the product.

If the PEMF coils are poor, the field coverage is weak, the slew rate is low and the red light output is minimal, adding gemstones does not solve those problems. The key point is simple: crystals may be part of the design, but they should not be used as a substitute for proper PEMF engineering, clear specifications and real testing.

Grounding Claims

Grounding is another claim often attached to infrared / multi-therapy PEMF mats. Some brands or promoters describe these products as “grounding mats” or suggest that using one is the same as being grounded outside. This is misleading.

 

Grounding usually refers to making a direct electrical connection with the earth, either by standing barefoot outside or by using a properly designed grounding product connected to the earth/grounding point of a plug socket.

PEMF is not the same thing. A PEMF mat can use low frequencies, and some may use frequencies linked to the Schumann resonance, but that does not mean the user is being grounded in the same way as walking barefoot on the earth.

 

This is where you can often see how little some sellers understand the technology they are promoting. A mat may include PEMF, heat, crystals and red light, but that does not automatically make it a grounding mat. The key point is simple: feeling relaxed on a warm mat is not the same as being grounded. Grounding and PEMF are different technologies, and they should not be confused.

Marketing Red Flags

After reading all of this, you might be wondering how infrared / multi-therapy PEMF mats became so popular. A big reason is marketing. 

 

These mats often look impressive because they list so many therapies in one product: PEMF, far infrared, red light, crystals, negative ions, grounding and more. For the average consumer, that can make the product feel like good value. But more claims do not always mean more quality.

 

One of the biggest red flags is when a mat promotes a long list of therapies but gives very little technical information about how each therapy is actually delivered. For PEMF, the company should be able to explain the coils, field coverage, intensity, waveform, slew rate and signal quality. For red light, they should be able to explain the wavelength, irradiance, coverage area and testing method. For negative ions, they should be able to show measurable output. For far infrared, they should be able to explain the heating technology, infrared output and EMF testing.

 

Another red flag is vague scientific language. Phrases like “lab grade”, “advanced technology”, “NASA-inspired”, “medical-grade”, “quantum energy” or “FDA registered” can sound impressive, but they do not automatically prove the product is high quality.

This is especially true with “FDA registered”. FDA registered does not mean FDA approved, FDA cleared, or independently tested for effectiveness. It is often a registration or listing requirement, not a stamp of product quality.

 

Influencer-heavy marketing is another thing to be cautious of. Many of these mats are promoted heavily through ads, affiliates and wellness influencers. That does not automatically mean the product is bad, but it does mean the consumer should look past the testimonials and ask for real specifications.

 

The key question is always: Can the company prove each therapy works in the way they are claiming? If the answer is no, the product may be relying more on marketing than meaningful technology.

Are All Multi-Therapy PEMF Mats Bad?

Not every infrared / multi-therapy PEMF mat is identical. Some may be better made than others. In our own testing, one mat performed better than another in certain areas. That is why it would not be fair to say every single mat is exactly the same. However, the overall pattern is still a concern.

 

Many of these mats follow the same general formula: crystals, infrared heat, red LEDs, negative ion claims, grounding claims and a small number of hidden PEMF coils. They often look different on the outside, but the internal design can be very similar.

The issue is not that combining therapies is always bad.

 

PEMF can work well alongside red light, heat or other wellness tools when each therapy is properly designed. The problem is when several therapies are packed into one product, but none of them are delivered at a meaningful level. This is why we are cautious about this entire category. A mat may technically produce PEMF, heat and red light, but that does not mean the PEMF has good coverage, the red light is strong enough, the negative ions are measurable, or the grounding claim is accurate.

 

The better question is: Can this specific mat prove that each therapy is being delivered properly? If a company can clearly show its coil layout, measured PEMF output, waveform, slew rate, red light irradiance, wavelength testing, negative ion output and EMF safety testing, then it deserves to be judged on that evidence.

 

But if the product relies mainly on big claims, crystals, influencer marketing and vague specifications, we would be very cautious. For most people, if you want PEMF, it is better to choose a device from a company that specialises in PEMF and can explain exactly what the device is producing.

What Should You Buy Instead?

If you want PEMF, it is usually better to buy a dedicated PEMF device from a company that specialises in PEMF. That does not mean a device has to be complicated or extremely expensive. It means the company should be able to clearly explain what the PEMF signal is doing.

 

At a minimum, you should be able to understand the coil design, coil layout, intensity, frequency range, waveform, slew rate, field coverage and signal quality. If a company cannot explain these basics, it is difficult to know what you are actually buying.

The same applies to red light, far infrared, grounding or any other therapy.

 

If you want to stack therapies, it is usually better to use separate devices that are each designed to do their own job properly. For example, a proper PEMF device for PEMF, a proper red light panel for red light therapy, and a properly designed infrared product if heat therapy is what you are looking for. This may sound less convenient than buying one mat that claims to do everything, but it usually gives you a much better chance of getting each therapy at a meaningful level.

 

The mistake is thinking that more features automatically means better value. A multi-therapy mat may sound like you are getting six or seven therapies in one product, but if the PEMF is poor, the red light is weak, the negative ions are not measurable, and the grounding claim is unclear, the value quickly disappears. A better approach is to buy fewer things, but buy them properly. Choose devices that are transparent, well tested, and built around the therapy they claim to provide.

Many infrared / multi-therapy PEMF mats appear to treat PEMF as one added feature among many. This can lead to weaker coil design, poor field coverage and less transparency around the actual PEMF output.

Do multi-therapy PEMF mats actually produce PEMF?

Some do technically produce PEMF, but that does not automatically mean the PEMF signal is good.

 

A mat may contain coils and produce a pulsed magnetic field, but the real question is whether the field is strong enough, clean enough, fast-changing enough and spread well enough across the body to be meaningful.

Does a higher gauss number mean the mat is better?

Not necessarily. Gauss tells you the strength of the magnetic field at a specific point, but it does not tell you how well the field spreads across the body.

 

A small coil may give a higher gauss reading directly above the coil, but still have poor coverage across the mat. This is why coil design, field spread and Weber matter too.

Are all multi-therapy PEMF mats bad?

Not every mat is identical, and some may perform better than others.

 

However, the general style of infrared / multi-therapy PEMF mat raises repeated concerns, especially around coil design, PEMF coverage, red light strength, negative ion claims, grounding claims and marketing transparency.

 

Each mat should be judged by its actual testing and specifications, not by how many therapies it lists.
