Depending on the system, they may be used to support relaxation, circulation, recovery, cellular activity and temporary muscular or joint discomfort. Can You Combine PEMF & Red Light Therapy?

Yes, PEMF and red light therapy can generally be used within the same wellness or recovery routine, provided the instructions and contraindications for both devices are followed.

 

The therapies may be used at the same time, one after the other or at different points throughout the day. One practical option is to lie on a PEMF mat while using a red light panel, allowing both therapies to be delivered during the same passive session. They can also be used separately where this is more comfortable or better suited to the equipment.

 

There is currently no universally proven order or combination protocol, and using both therapies does not guarantee better or faster results. The most suitable approach will depend on the products being used, the individual’s goals and the guidance supplied by each manufacturer.

PEMF and red light therapy are sometimes used for similar wellness and recovery goals, but they are very different technologies. PEMF uses changing magnetic fields generated through coils, while red light therapy uses selected wavelengths of red and near-infrared light.

How Can PEMF and Red Light Therapy Be Used Together?

PEMF and red light therapy can be used simultaneously, one after the other or at different times of the day. Our preferred method is to use them together where the equipment allows, as this creates a simple, time-efficient session and exposes the body to both therapies while the user rests.

Our Optimal Combination

Our preferred full-body routine is to lie on a low- or medium-intensity PEMF mat while using a red light panel positioned at the manufacturer’s recommended distance. This allows the body to receive pulsed electromagnetic fields and red and near-infrared light during the same passive session.

 

Using the therapies together does not necessarily make either technology stronger, but it provides two different forms of stimulation at the same time. It is also a practical way to make both therapies part of a consistent routine without completing two separate sessions. The PEMF mat should be positioned normally beneath the body, while the red light panel should remain securely mounted and at the correct treatment distance. The recommended settings and session limits for both devices should still be followed.

When Using High-Intensity PEMF

High-intensity PEMF devices should not be operated alongside a red light panel unless the manufacturers have specifically confirmed that the two products are compatible. Stronger electromagnetic fields may interfere with nearby electrical equipment, including the controls and internal electronics used within some red light systems. Electromagnetic compatibility depends on the individual equipment, its shielding and the distance between the devices, rather than intensity alone. Some PEMF manufacturers specifically warn that their equipment may interrupt nearby devices and recommend relocating or increasing the separation between them.

 

When using a high-intensity PEMF system, our preferred approach is therefore to complete the PEMF treatment first, switch the device off and then begin the red light session. This avoids operating the red light panel within the active electromagnetic field while still allowing both therapies to be included within the same recovery routine.

 

The PEMF and red light devices should not be positioned directly beside one another during the high-intensity session. Always follow the separation and electromagnetic-compatibility guidance provided by both manufacturers.

When Using a Red Light Therapy Bed

A red light therapy bed surrounds the body in a similar way to a sunbed, so it is generally not practical or appropriate to place a separate PEMF mat or applicator inside it unless the bed and PEMF system have been specifically designed and approved for combined use. For this setup, we recommend completing the PEMF session first and moving into the red light bed afterwards. This can be done using a full-body PEMF mat before entering the bed or with a localised PEMF applicator directed towards the chosen area.

 

Using PEMF first in this situation is primarily a practical and equipment-safety recommendation. It prevents a separate PEMF device from being placed inside the red light bed and avoids exposing the bed’s electronics to an active electromagnetic field. It should not be presented as a clinically proven treatment order.

Using the Therapies Separately

Where simultaneous use is not practical, PEMF and red light therapy can also be separated throughout the day. Someone may use red light during the morning and PEMF later as part of a relaxation routine, or complete both treatments consecutively with the PEMF session first.

 

The most appropriate setup depends on the type of PEMF system, the design of the red light equipment and the guidance supplied by each manufacturer. Simultaneous use is our preferred option with compatible low- or medium-intensity mat systems and freestanding panels, while separate consecutive sessions are recommended for high-intensity PEMF devices and enclosed red light beds.

Contraindications of Red Light Therapy

Photosensitivity & Photosensitising Medication

Red light therapy is contraindicated for people with a medical condition that causes significant sensitivity to light unless its use has been approved by an appropriate healthcare professional. Caution is also required with medications that can increase photosensitivity, including certain antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medicines, antidepressants, chemotherapy drugs and topical skincare treatments. Anyone taking medication should check the patient information leaflet or speak with their doctor or pharmacist before using red light therapy.

Known or Suspected Malignancy

Red light therapy should not be applied directly over a known or suspected malignant tumour without approval and supervision from the individual’s oncology team. Photobiomodulation is sometimes used within clinical cancer care to help manage specific treatment side effects, but these applications follow carefully controlled protocols and should not be treated as equivalent to unsupervised home use.

Cautions of Red Light Therapy

Pregnancy

Caution is advised during pregnancy because the safety of general full-body red and near-infrared light therapy has not been sufficiently established. Pregnant users should follow the manufacturer’s guidance and speak with their doctor or midwife before treatment, particularly before directing light towards the abdomen.

Eye Safety

Avoid staring directly into powerful red or near-infrared LEDs. Near-infrared light is largely invisible, meaning its intensity cannot be judged by brightness alone. Follow the manufacturer’s eye-protection guidance and use the supplied protective eyewear where recommended, particularly when treating the face or using a high-powered panel at close range. Specialist photobiomodulation treatments for the eyes use purpose-built equipment and should not be compared with looking directly into a general-use red light panel.

Photosensitive Epilepsy

Those with photosensitive epilepsy or a history of light-triggered seizures should be cautious when using a device with pulsing, flashing or strobing modes. These settings should be avoided unless an appropriate healthcare professional has confirmed that they are suitable. A continuous-light setting may be more appropriate, but the manufacturer’s instructions should still be followed.

Reduced Sensation and Heat Sensitivity

Some high-powered red light panels can produce noticeable warmth. People with reduced skin sensation, impaired temperature awareness or conditions affecting their ability to feel heat should use additional caution. Keep the device at the recommended distance and stop the session if the skin becomes excessively warm, painful or irritated.

Recent Procedures and Sensitive Skin

Anyone who has recently undergone surgery, laser treatment, chemical peeling, microneedling, injections or another skin procedure should check with the practitioner who performed it before using red light therapy over the area. Caution should also be taken over acutely inflamed, damaged or unusually sensitive skin.

Contraindications of PEMF

Implanted Electronic Devices

One of the main contraindication’s of PEMF therapy are for individuals who have a pacemaker, cochlear implant or an intrathecal pump fitted. If you have an implanted electrical device such as a pacemaker, cochlear implant or an intrathecal pump we do not recommend you apply PEMF therapy because there is a risk there is a risk that the magnetic field produced by a PEMF device can shut the device off or otherwise interfere with its function.

Organ Transplants

PEMFs are contraindicated in organ transplant patients. PEMF therapy is not advised after an organ transplant as over stimulation could increase the risk of rejection.

Cautions of PEMF

Pregnancy

Caution is advised during pregnancy. Whilst there is no evidence of harm caused by using PEMFs during pregnancy, their safety has not yet been established.

Neurological Conditions

Those with neurological conditions that can cause seizure (e.g epilepsy) are advised to be cautious when using PEMF therapy. Reports of PEMF initiating a seizure are very rare however there is the theoretical potential for this to happen.

Active Bleeding

One of the benefits of applying PEMF therapy is the increase in circulation and blood oxygenation but for people suffering from active bleeding i.e after an operation, this may worsen the blood loss and reduce the ability of the blood to clot in order for it heal over properly. Any source of bleeding should be fully controlled before using PEMF therapy.
